Corpus-based evidence against sequence priming

چکیده
Syntactic priming refers to the fact that speakers are more likely to produce a target utterance with a given structure if they have previously produced (or comprehended) a prime with the same structure. In the experimental literature (e.g., Bock 1986), priming has only been studied in cases where there are two semantically equivalent structural alternatives (e.g., active and passive) in the prime and the target. Recent corpus-based work (Reitter et al. 2006) demonstrated that syntactic priming generalizes to the repetition of arbitrary syntactic rules in a corpus, rather than being limited to specific structural alternatives.

Against Sequence Priming: Evidence from Constituents and Distituents in Corpus Data
Structural priming, i.e., the tendency to repeat linguistic material, can be explained by two alternative representational assumptions: either as the repetition of hierarchical representations generated by syntactic rules, or as the repetition of lexical sequences. We present two studies that test these explanations by investigating priming effects in a dialogue corpus. We compare syntactic con...
متن کاملCorpus Evidence for Age Effects on Priming in Child Language
Structural priming, the tendency to repeat previously uttered syntactic structures, can give insight into human language processing and acquisition. We report two corpus-based studies of children’s structural priming that test the following claim of the item-based account of language acquisition: as older children generalize over structures, priming increases with age. A hypothesis derived from...
متن کاملPsycholinguistic and corpus-linguistic evidence for L2 constructions
In Construction Grammar, highly frequent syntactic configurations are assumed to be stored as symbolic units in the mental lexicon alongside words. Considering the example of gerund and infinitival complement constructions in English (She tried rocking the baby vs. She tried to rock the baby), this study combines corpus-linguistic and experimental evidence to investigate the question whether th...
متن کاملPriming of Syntactic Rules in Task-Oriented Dialogue and Spontaneous Conversation
Previous work provided corpus evidence for structural priming for specific syntactic constructions. The present paper extends these results by investigating priming effects involving arbitrary syntactic rules in spoken dialogue corpora. We demonstrate the existence of withinand between-speaker priming in both spontaneous conversation (the Switchboard corpus) and task-oriented dialogue (the Map ...
متن کاملPriming Effects in Combinatory Categorial Grammar
This paper presents a corpus-based account of structural priming in human sentence processing, focusing on the role that syntactic representations play in such an account. We estimate the strength of structural priming effects from a corpus of spontaneous spoken dialogue, annotated syntactically with Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) derivations. This methodology allows us to test a range of...
